To Inspire Your Spouse’s Support
Who wouldn’t like their spouse to support their goals and promote their growth? I know I would. If you would like your spouse to support your goals and promote your growth, I have good news. Specifically, three studies involving over 1,000 adults in romantic relationships reveal a simple way to encourage our spouses to do that. I emphasize that this is a “simple way;” it’s also easy. All you have to do is express gratitude for the times your spouse supports your goals. That’s it. Tell your spouse “Thank you.” Expressing gratitude toward your spouse lets them know that their efforts matter. It informs them that you value them and their support, that you trust their input, that you care about your relationship with them.
Receiving gratitude will increase your spouse’s motivation to continue helping and supporting you in achieving your future goals. Interestingly, expressed gratitude increased motivation to help in the future even if the goal was not achieved. Simple, right? Simply taking the time to express gratitude for your spouse, showing your appreciation, and saying thanks, will increase the likelihood that they will help you achieve your goals in the future. It will inspire your spouse to help. And, as an added benefit, it will increase the sense of closeness in your marriage.
