Gratitude Comes in All Sizes
Gratitude comes in all sizes. I don’t mean the person expressing gratitude is big or small, young or old, although they truly can be any of those. Nor am I referring to the expression of gratitude as large or small, although it may appear so to the ungrateful eye. In reality, every expression of gratitude represents a gift from the heart and who can call one gift from the heart bigger than the next.
Still, I say gratitude comes in all different sizes. Let me explain.
An expression of gratitude may come in a simple word of thanks. It may be spoken or written. Either way, that simple word of thanks is not really so simple. It completes the cycle of gratitude by filling the giver with greater joy and the receiver with greater appreciation.
An expression of gratitude may come in the form of affection, like a handshake or a hug. An authentic show of physical gratitude has a profound impact on our sense of intimacy. Expressing gratitude through an authentic expression of affection brings both the giver and the receiver into a deeper relationship and appreciation of the meaning of their relationship. A small action with a profound impact.
An expression of gratitude may come in the form of ceremony. For instance, the receiver may offer a toast to express their gratitude. They may write a letter of gratitude to the giver and read it to them over a drink. The recipient may offer thanks by praying for the giver. Each of these may appear minor, but they celebrate the giver through ceremony, blessing the giver for their generosity.
An expression of gratitude may come in the form of a gift. We have all heard stories of people who, upon reaching a pursued goal, offered a gift to those who supported them in their pursuit. For instance, a person who graduates from university buys their family dinner as an expression of gratitude for their generous support. Or consider the stories of NFL players who buy their parents a new car after they get their first NFL check. Some may give the gift of a song or poem, a work of art, or an object they know the giver will enjoy. Through such gifts, whether a new car, a simple dinner, or a poem, the recipient returns gratitude to those who generously supported their journey.
An expression of gratitude may come in the form of a life well-lived. We can all live our lives in gratitude to those people who have supported and inspired us on our journey. A life that honors those who have gone before us, who inspired us, and continue to support us is a wonderful gift of gratitude. Our parents, mentors, and teachers deserve our expression of gratitude communicated in a life well-lived.
Yes, gratitude comes in many sizes. I wonder… to whom will you express gratitude? And how will you choose to express that gratitude today?
