Robbing My Family of My Attention…One Snack at a Time
A study involving over 2,100 adults 40- to 70-years-old reveals how snacks impact our attention span. When I saw that “teaser,” I wanted to know more. After all, I’m between 40- and 70-years-old…and I like to snack. What I discovered encouraged me to snack more wisely. Specifically, this study found that increasing our daily intake of ultra-processed foods by just 10% led to a significant drop in attention span. Ultra-processed foods include items like soft drinks, packaged salty snacks, ready-made meals, anything that is not fresh whole food. And an increase of 10%…that is equivalent to single, standard sized package of potato chips. That one little package of potato chips can lead to a significant drop in one’s attention span.
If that’s not bad enough, the ultra-processed foods had this impact even if the participants followed a healthy diet (like the Mediterranean Diet). I’ve always excused my snack by stating that I eat healthily most of the time. Now that excuse, my excuse, is scientifically negated. (Sometimes I hate research.)
Well, next time I reach for that donut or bag of chips, I’m going to think twice. I might even decide on an apple or plum or a hand full of cherries instead. It’s not just because I want to maintain a healthy attention span. It’s what that attention span means for my relationship. So, I think I’ll start eating more healthy snacks. Then, I can give my spouse and children my full attention, unhindered by the negative impact of processed foods.
